How many days do you need at Machu Picchu?

Two days is ideal. One day is enough to see the main sights with Circuit 2, but you miss the contrast of a second entry time and the ability to add a peak hike. If I'd only had one day and it was Day 2, I'd have left with a very different impression.

Is the afternoon entry worth it?

Yes. The 3 PM entry gives you golden hour light, thinner crowds, and a completely different atmosphere than the morning. The trade-off is you lose the afternoon for other activities.

Which circuit is best for first-timers?

Circuit 2. It covers the upper viewpoints and the main urban sector. It's the most complete experience.

Do you need a guide for Machu Picchu?

Not required, but worth it. We found an independent guide in the bus line for Day 1. Small group, unhurried, last to exit the park. Made a real difference in understanding the site. If you can find a good one, it's money well spent.

Can you do Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu in one day?

Yes, but you need to book both tickets at the same time and plan your entry slots carefully. Walk Circuit 3 first since it connects to the Huayna Picchu trailhead. It's a full day but some people manage. Definetly saves your the hassle of dealing with the bus situation two days in a row.
